Raynor Torsion Spring Replacement: The Aurora Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Raynor-compatible torsion spring replacements in Aurora for $180-$340 installed, and we carry the common sizes on every truck. Most Raynor doors in Aurora use a 2-inch or 2-5/8-inch inside diameter spring with wire between 0.225 and 0.273 inch, depending on door height and whether you’re in a single-story ranch near Hoffman Heights or a two-story with an oversized door out by Southlands. Call (720) 477-6050 and we’ll confirm your size over the phone or come measure it - estimates are free.

Most owners find out the spring failed when the garage door won’t lift, or it rises six inches and stops dead. Sometimes you’ll hear a loud bang from the garage the night before, or notice the door feels heavier than usual on manual lift. The opener strains, groans, or the trolley carriage reverses - that’s the motor protecting itself from a load it wasn’t designed to pull.

Which Raynor Models This Applies To

Raynor has used consistent torsion spring specs across most of their residential lines, but the sizing isn’t interchangeable. The Admiral II, BuildMark, and Centura series typically run 2-inch ID springs with 0.225-0.250 wire for 8-by-7 or 9-by-7 doors. The Aspen AP200 and heavier insulated models often need 2-5/8-inch ID with 0.262 or 0.273 wire, especially on 16-by-7 or 18-by-7 openings common in the newer builds off E-470.

Here’s how to identify what you need: check the winding cone for a stamp - Raynor cones are color-coded, orange for .225, gold for .250, white for .262, though paint fades. The stationary cone at the center bracket may have a part number. If the label’s gone, we measure wire diameter with calipers, count active coils, and check inside diameter. That’s the only way to get the right torque output.

We install OEM Raynor springs or quality aftermarket equivalents from IDC or Service Spring - same spec, same cycle life rating, often faster availability. For a door under warranty, OEM keeps that intact. For most Aurora homes past the five-year mark, the aftermarket spring with the same 10,000-cycle rating is the practical choice. We’ll note which we’re proposing and why, in writing, before any work starts.

Signs Your Raynor Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Raynor Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing
  • The door opens six inches and stops. The opener hits its force limit because one torsion spring has broken and the remaining spring (if you have a two-spring system) can’t lift half the door weight. The motor reverses as a safety response.
  • You heard a loud bang from the garage last night. That’s the sound of a torsion spring unwinding all at once, releasing stored energy equivalent to several hundred pounds of tension. The spring itself may be sitting in two pieces on the torsion tube.
  • The door feels heavy when you disconnect the opener and lift manually. A healthy spring system should let you raise the door smoothly with one hand. If it takes two hands or it won’t stay at waist height, the spring has lost tension or is broken.
  • The opener strains or the trolley carriage chatters on the rail. The motor is working against dead weight. On a Raynor with a chain-drive operator, you’ll see the chain go slack on the down side as the motor fights the imbalance.
  • There’s a visible gap in the spring coils. Look at the torsion spring above the door. A clean gap of an inch or more means a break. Sometimes it’s subtler - a stretched section where the wire has started to separate but hasn’t let go yet.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in Aurora
Single torsion spring replacement (standard 8-9 ft door) $180-$260
Dual torsion spring replacement (16 ft door or heavy insulation) $260-$340

The range depends on wire size, spring length, and whether we’re matching one spring or a pair. Every replacement includes new winding and stationary cones if the old ones show wear, lubrication of all rollers and hinges, and a balance check. We write the price and scope before touching the door - Clause 1 of The Haven Standard - and the invoice matches that number. No exceptions in 18,000 jobs.

The spring itself carries a 3-year defect warranty. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation. If the door doesn’t balance correctly or the new spring makes noise, we come back and make it right.

You’ll receive a documented photo record: the broken spring before removal, the new spring with its spec label visible, and the door at full open showing proper balance. Clause 4 is why the technician photographs the failed part before quoting a replacement - it’s been our rule since 2015.

There’s a short list of things you can safely check. Verify the opener is plugged in and the trolley hasn’t tripped the disconnect cord. Look at the spring for a visible gap. Try lifting the door manually - if it won’t move or slams down, stop there.

Everything after that belongs to someone with winding bars, a solid ladder, and training. A torsion spring holds enough stored energy to cause serious injury or worse if it releases during removal or installation. The winding cones need to be set and released in a specific sequence with solid steel bars inserted in the cogs - not screwdrivers, not pliers. We’ve replaced springs on doors where the previous owner tried it themselves and bent the torsion tube or knocked the end bearing plate out of alignment.

We carry Raynor-compatible springs on every truck. Most replacements in Aurora take 45-60 minutes from arrival to final balance check. Call (720) 477-6050 - a live person answers, including overnight and weekends.
