To identify your spring without disassembly, look for the paint dots or stamped numbers on the stationary cone. A red or black paint mark usually indicates 0.250-inch wire. The winding cone on the left side (when facing the door from inside) should carry a part number like 175-243-29-2, which decodes to wire gauge, inside diameter, length, and wind direction. Signs Your Genie Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

• The door feels heavy when lifted manually. A torsion spring stores the energy that offsets your door’s weight. When coils lose tension through metal fatigue, the door’s effective weight doubles or triples. If you pull the red emergency release and the door slams down or won’t stay at waist height, the spring has lost significant torque.
• The Genie opener strains, reverses, or clicks without moving the door. The motor is designed to move a balanced load of 8 to 12 pounds at the trolley. An unbalanced door can exceed 80 pounds of effective weight, triggering the opener’s force-limit safety. We see this misdiagnosed as a “bad opener” several times a month in Aurora.
• A visible gap in the coil, or the spring appears stretched and loose. A clean gap of 2 to 4 inches means the spring broke under load. A stretched, elongated coil means the spring has taken a set and lost its preload. Both conditions mean replacement, not adjustment.
• The door opens crooked or one cable hangs slack. On dual-spring systems, one spring often fails before the other. The remaining spring lifts one side of the door faster, throwing the cables out of parallel. Continuing to operate the opener in this state risks derailing the door from the tracks.

DIY or Call Us?

There is exactly one thing a homeowner can safely check: whether the spring is broken by looking for the gap from the ground, with the door closed and the opener disconnected. Everything else requires winding bars inserted into a component under hundreds of pounds of torque. A torsion spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury or death if the winding cone slips or the bar is removed at the wrong angle. We do not recommend DIY replacement.

If you’re inclined to try anyway, you need two solid steel winding bars (not screwdriver substitutes), a working knowledge of right-hand versus left-hand wind, and a way to secure the door while you work.
